May is Mental Health Awareness Month and it sure seems like a perfect opportunity to recognize and learn about the importance of Mental Health. This month, we recognize the 1 in 5 who experience mental illness and the 5 in 5 who are affected by it. This year, the NAMI message is “You are not alone.”
“From every corner of the country, for every age and every background, in a time of challenge and change, we are united even when we appear alone. Mental health is not for some. Mental Health is for ALL.”
Throughout the month, NAMI will feature personal stories from real people experiencing mental health conditions. You can submit your story at nami.org/yourstory. By reading about lived experience, NAMI aims to make people feel less alone in their mental health journeys.
This year, the NAMI Finger Lakes focus will be on the wonderful books that have inspired and informed us on our journey with our loved ones living with mental illness. Do you have a favorite book that has helped inform or inspire you regarding mental health and/or mental illness? We’d love to hear about it. If you’d like to share, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 607-288-2460 so we can learn from you and share your review with our NAMI Finger Lakes family.
NAMI Finger Lakes and affiliates across New York State have planned a month of programs and events that explore how mental health impacts our lives and opportunities for self-care. We’ve developed a calendar of these events and more and will add others as the month progresses. Please check back frequently for updates and additions. We’ll also share information throughout May regarding programs, services, and membership.
And remember…you are not alone.
