NAMI Finger Lakes announces its 2020 Winter -Spring NAMI Family to Family Education course starting January 25th.
NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 12-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people living with mental illness. It is a designated evidenced-based program. Research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to an individual living with a mental health condition.
This course is taught by trained family members who have been there, and includes presentations, discussion and interactive exercises. Family-to-Family not only provides critical information and strategies for taking care of the person you love, but you’ll also find out that you’re not alone. Recovery is a journey, and there is hope. The group setting of Family-to-Family provides mutual support and shared positive impact—you can experience compassion and reinforcement from people who understand your situation.
The sessions will run 10am to 1pm on Saturdays starting January 25th at Access to Independence of Cortland County, 26 North Main St. Cortland, New York. Call 607-835-6721 to register.
Participant Perspectives:
“The course has helped me to realize that my daughter is still inside the body that is often times hidden by the mental illness and that I am not alone in this.”
“Thank you so much for teaching the class. Your dedication to helping others that are dealing with mental illness issues within the family is inspiring. Without your help and guidance, I don’t know where I would be today. Many of the things I learned over the 12 weeks has helped me deal with our sick “relative”. I gained insight, coping skills, options…you name it! I wish more of my family members were more open-minded and would take this important NAMI class. I would highly recommend that ANYONE facing issues with a family member that has a mental illness should take this class. No, it’s not the “miracle” you are seeking for a cure, but it goes a LONG way in helping, understanding, and coping with this insidious and cruel disease.”
“This course overall was the single most, without a doubt, helpful and informative thing ever offered in all my years searching for answers… It has helped me to understand better and communicate more effectively with my brother.”
